The SAIL community loves animals. Pupils and parents engaged themselves in a number of charity actions to support local animal shelters.
Moreover, SAIL International School may be the only Cambridge International School breeding their own bees on the schoolyard.
The loss of biodiversity is seen as one of the most sincere environmental problems related to the development of human civilisation. The “Bee or not to be” project teaches pupils in a practical way about endangered species, and how we can help animals even in the ecosystem in the center of a city.
As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. They support the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants, which serve as food and shelter for creatures large and small. Bees contribute to complex, interconnected ecosystems that allow a diverse number of different species to co-exist. Hence the reference to the famous quote from Shakespeare.
While observing a beehive of honey bees might not be the first choice in a primary school for safety reasons, solitary bees like the red mason bee are harmless and give our pupils a great insight into the nature around us. We believe that even the youngest students can learn how to deal responsibly with our nature.
After an introduction into the subject last year, all classes conducted workshops about bees. For his impressive presentation and all his extra-ordinary engagement within this project Jonathan received the honor batch “Bee Protector”. Yesterday, all the pupils were able to examine the elements of a typical bee hotel in the school yard and filled the school's new bee hotel with hundreds of cocoons.
A small male bee took this opportunity to hatch in front of everyone`s eyes and was christened the “Bee-Boy”. Can you find him in the photo?
All pupils helped helped place the cocoons in the hatchery.
